A.I.M BY KYLE ABRAHAM
Cassette: Volume 1Description
“I question and notice my growing sensitivity to the world and environmental changes around me. Where will this world be in five years?”, asks Kyle Abraham.
One of the most sought-after choreographers and dancers of our time, Abraham has established a unique and expressive dance style that deals with issues of identity, history and geography. Again and again, Kyle Abraham has explored iconic examples of African American cultural self-determination in his work. Be it the legendary New York gay disco Paradise Garage, musicians such as Nina Simone, Sam Cooke, D’Angelo or Max Roach’s political concept album “We Insist! Freedom Now Suite” from 1960.
At the same time, he combines rap, hip-hop and breakdance culture with classical music and dance tradition. His choreographies are always explosively inspiring and personally touching at the same time. Or, as the New York Times wrote in a text about his play “Pavement”, in which Abraham refers to the urban lifestyle and a culture of police violence and discrimination in the traditionally Black neighbourhoods of his native Pittsburgh: “The asphalt is a hard, unyielding thing, but for some people it’s also a home.”
