Die wechselvolle Geschichte eines Platzes, der keiner war

Researchers from all over the world know St. Pölten. During Tangente, the City Museum shows in all its facets why.

“Von Steinen und Beinen: Die wechselvolle Geschichte eines Platzes, der keiner war” (of stones and legs: the eventful history of a place that was no place at all)

Ten years of archaeological excavations have brought sensational results to light at the Domplatz St. Pölten: above a hitherto completely unknown Roman administrative palace from the 4th century CE, a medieval church ensemble including a cemetery was built, which shaped this place for centuries and is only partially preserved today. The exhibition not only presents original discoveries from the cathedral square, but also for the first time gives a deep insight into the living conditions back then. There is not only a lot to see and marvel at, but also a variety of hands-on activities for people of all ages.

“Zeitreise am Domplatz” (time travel on the Domplatz)

For the first time, visitors can combine a real walk in the open air with a virtual tour through history in the mixed reality experience on the Domplatz. While walking through the square, the latest VR glasses technology is used to display historical buildings combined with the real surroundings. The following can be discovered from the medieval building era: the Romanesque cathedral portal, the St. Andrew’s Chapel and the Leutkirche. Special attention is paid to a detailed reconstruction of the buildings and to the technically highly complex seamless embedding of the historical landscape into the real environment. A spectacular interactive experience that makes the boundaries between the real and artificial world disappear.
