Kampf um die Stadt
Julian Warner / Veronika MaurerA wrestling show
Description
Stop! Building site! A new neighbourhood is being built here, a chic lighthouse project is being realised there. Car parks make way for hipster cafés! Cultural events instead of infrastructure! The city is changing - but for whom? Who decides? Who is courted and who is not? Who owns the city? And who is to blame for the misery? Experience-hungry cultural tourists or visionary urban planners? Capital-rich investors, bobos or drag queens?
In the "Kampf um die Stadt" (‘Battle for the City’), cultural warfare becomes class warfare again. Six professional wrestlers compete against each other individually and in tag teams. Be there when the little people free themselves from the clutches of the right and put "Die schwarze Null" (‘black zero’) in a headlock!
Wrestling is martial arts, choreography and spectacle. With twirling bodies, music, acting and slapstick interludes, wrestling is a fun form of dialectical theatre that stages the contradictions of our late capitalist present.
Julian Warner alias Fehler Kuti and Veronika Maurer, responsible, among other projects, for the Brechtfestival Augsburg until 2025, have for years been playfully crossing the boundaries between decolonial critique, avantgarde stage productions and sport as spectacle and mass phenomenon.
